Arrival of the King

Mark 11:1-14

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples2 and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. 3 If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” 4 And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. 5 And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. 7 And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. 8 And many spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields.9 And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David! Hosanna in the highest!” 11 And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the twelve. 12 On the following day, when they came from Bethany, he was hungry. 13 And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Luke 19:28-40

And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples,30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.”35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”

1. There is a King but he is no ordinary king.
2. This King arrives in unexpected fashion and to reshape expectations.
3. This King comes with a mission

What is a covenant?

• A covenant is a formal relationship between 2 parties, God and the human partner, that sets the obligations and expectations. At its most basic level, a covenant is an oath that bids two or more parties.

The Davidic Covenant

The New Covenant

• Instead of God pouring his Spirit on certain leaders and rulers,in which those people had closer access to the Lord, God will bring every member of the new covenant to the same status with God by filling them with His Spirit.

2. The New Covenant will give all covenant members new hearts.
3. The new covenant will provide a different sacrifice

Reshaping Expectations

How do we enter into the Kingdom of Christ? We enter in through faith and repentance.

How is the Kingship and Kingdom of Christ different from other kings and kingdoms?

What areas in your life are you having difficulty in turning over to the Lordship of Christ?

Think about Christ’s rule. How does he rule? Is it hostile? Is it arrogantly?

What would you say makes his rule unique? If Christ is the King of kings, how should you serve him this week?

If Christ is the King of kings, how should you view your fight against sin this week?

If Christ is the King of kings, how should you treat others this week?

If Christ is the KIng of kings, how should you worship him this week?

How can you use this week to prepare spiritually for the celebration of our King’s resurrection?
